THE GREATEST PIECE OF COMMENTARY EVER!

It was the best piece of commentary I have heard at the end of a match. In case you missed it, Brendan Fevola was smiling and hugging the opposition from St. Kilda and Nathan Buckley said words to the effect of:

"You've done nothing, not helped the team and there you are hugging the opposition, whilst that bloke (Chris Judd) has busted his guts... I don't like it"

I don't like it either Bucks! As a Carlton supporter it was a comment that was long overdue and at the time I hoped it would strike a chord with Fevola. But whilst Fevola can provide us with many highs he again disappointed when he called MMM 105.1FM yesterday and said that he in fact was "disappointed" in the comments from Buckley.

As he did many times as a player Nathan Buckley separated himself from his media contemporaries on Friday night. And I hope he continues to do so.

ROBERT WALLS: HARSH ON RICHO

The views of Robert Walls divide the consumer of AFL footy. I listened to Carlton versus Collingwood two weeks ago and his views on the game changed like Melbourne's weather. But that is a blog for another day. It was his performance on Channel 10's the 'Fifth Quarter' last night that left me slapping my forehead. The crucial moment was when he said:

"Richo, Foley and Brown didn't push their way through the game"

Richo... not pushing his way through the game??! The bloke did his hammy at the 5 minute mark of the last quarter. I am not sure what Robert would have him do?

As an aside, Foley gathered 26 possessions and was named in the best by many.

Robert has a solid reputation in the media and has won several awards. But comments like the above leave me wondering... more Walls research is ahead for me.

VOSS TO COACH: MUSIC TO MY CHANNEL 10 EARS

Michael Voss has announced his intention to coach in some capacity in 2009. I suspect this will be music to the ears of those in charge at Channel 10. Voss’ performance as a ‘special comments’ broadcaster is ordinary at best and his use of the English language during a game proves that ‘The Age’ has some excellent ghost-writers.

Voss’ lack of ability has been brought to the fore by the excellent performance of Luke Darcy. Darcy is doing to Voss what Nathan Buckley has done to David Schwarz at Channel 7 – made him look second rate. Here are some examples of Darcy and Voss during the 3rd quarter of the North Melbourne and St Kilda match last night:

1. Darcy asked Voss who should now play on Brent Harvey. Voss spoke like a politician. A lot of noise was made but he had no answer and no idea.
2. Darcy identified that Luke Ball had sustained a leg injury. Voss’ comment simply reiterated this without adding anything
3. St Kilda’s Fisher was moved on to the ball and Voss gave us “Fisher’s in the guts”. Insightful.
4. Voss commented, “The game has started in this quarter as it did at the start”. Gold.
5. This piece of ‘captain obvious’ brilliance came true “If St Kilda keep pressing it may change”. And it did. The Saints went from 15 points down to win by 15.
6. Darcy said that Gram should be moved on to the ball. Voss said, “I agree”.
7. The ball was at centre half back for North and Darcy identified that “Petrie is on here” and the ball was duly delivered to him. After the fact Voss added “(Petrie) slipped out the back nice there”.

I can only hope that performance in the commentary box doesn’t predict performance in the coaches box. Otherwise we may have another Tim Watson on our hands.

This site is called footymediawatch.com but the incompetence of a former pro golfer turned commentator has caused me to digress.

If you read the papers daily you are used to putting up with paid advertising features. But don’t be fooled, it happens on radio too; only problem is you don’t get the disclaimer provided by the print media

PATRICK SMITH WHACKS CAREY... WHY BOTHER?

The Whacker gave Carey a belting today... but why did he bother? Surely there is something more important that the self-righteous journo from The Australian could have focused on? Let's start at the source.

I am making an assumption here but Mike Sheahan must have given Wayne Carey a call, got his views on Buddy Franklin and co., and then turned it into the back page story for today's Herald-Sun

A SEINFELD STORY: IT WAS ABOUT NOTHING

Bruce Matthews and the Herald-Sun went with the back page headline “Charlie or the Team – Mitchell faces Brownlow dilemma after trip charge” on Tuesday May 27th. Matthews suggested that Mitchell was going to sacrifice his Brownlow eligibility by pleading guilty to a tripping charge that, based on the points system, would allow him to play but not win the medal.

Hawks Football Manager Mark Evans was quoted as saying that the Brownlow was “not a consideration” when determining whether they would contest the charge. But why let the facts get in the way of a good story? Brownlow betting was of course suspended and the usual suspects got onboard

PATRICK SMITH: THE WHACKER

First an English lesson via Cambridge Dictionary on-line. The term ‘Whack’ is to hit, whilst the term ‘Wacko’ describes behaviour that is strange or different – somewhat eccentric or even clown-like. So whilst the latter could label Patrick I am going with the former.

NOTE TO SELF: DON’T USE A NUMBER

During the week St Kilda Chairman Greg Westaway was quoted as saying “we’d like to see him (Coach Ross Lyon) there for 10 years because that’s how you run clubs”. He continued on in a similar vein to publicly back his coach, yet all the media heard was “10 years” and the story careered on from there.

Mark ‘Robbo’ Robinson scored the back page of Wednesday’s Herald-Sun and shared his story with radio counterparts. On the same day his Herald-Sun colleague Mike Sheahan squeezed out a last minute opinion piece suggesting that Westaway was ‘naïve’ and stated that ‘his reference to a 10-year stay was silly

SAM NEWMAN VS. THE AGE

In the wake of the ‘mannequin stunt’, The Age and Sam Newman continue to trade blows. Well, The Age delivers subtle and intelligent jabs whilst Newman continues to clumsily flail away.

Greg Baum in The Saturday Age on May 24th wrote a piece entitled “Savvy Kennett cannot play the innocent”. In it he described the fallout of comments made by Hawthorn President Jeff Kennett that Melbourne FC, more specifically Jim Stynes, should relocate the team to the Gold Coast

CARO AND THE MANNEQUIN… 53 DAYS YOUNG

I have nothing but admiration for Caroline Wilson. She is an intelligent and gutsy woman who, in 26 years of covering football, has broken down barriers for all women, not just those in the world of sports journalism.

In the Saturday Age on May 17, 2008 she wrote a magnificent article describing the aftermath of 'that' Footy Show stunt. Whilst she did not say it directly, to me it beautifully illustrated and defined the sheer ineptitude and weakness of many of her male counterparts
