PATRICK SMITH: THE WHACKER
June 1st 2008 04:07
First an English lesson via Cambridge Dictionary on-line. The term ‘Whack’ is to hit, whilst the term ‘Wacko’ describes behaviour that is strange or different – somewhat eccentric or even clown-like. So whilst the latter could label Patrick I am going with the former.
In his article “House of Ross Lyon still haunted by Grant Thomas’ ghost” on May 30th in The Australian, ‘The Whacker’ went on his usual spree. He whacked:
1. Westaway for supporting Coach Ross Lyon
2. Lyon for his coaching record
3. Westaway for comments made last October against the St Kilda Board at the time
4. And finally, he linked all of the above to one of his favourite ‘whacking boys’ Grant
Thomas
Multiple whacks later an article that started by criticising Westaway for supporting Lyon finished with ‘The Whacker’ blaming Grant Thomas for “killing Lyon and the team of 2008”. (Note: I too have similar views to Patrick on Grant Thomas).
But where is the support for Westaway for getting rid of Butterss who had both controversially hired and fired Thomas? Similarly, given Patrick’s self-righteous stance on alcohol and drugs in sport you would have thought he would provide more support for Westaway trying to stamp it out in the boardroom?
Patrick clearly writes by the philosophy “Where there’s a whack there’s a way”.
The work of ‘The Whacker’ will remain a guiding light for footymediawatch.com – stay tuned for more ‘Whack-Watch’.
