THIS IS NOT AN ADVERTISING FEATURE!

June 16th 2008 12:48
This site is called footymediawatch.com but the incompetence of a former pro golfer turned commentator has caused me to digress.

If you read the papers daily you are used to putting up with paid advertising features. But don’t be fooled, it happens on radio too; only problem is you don’t get the disclaimer provided by the print media.

Well I guess you do? The phrase typically used is that ‘X’ is “brought to you by Company Y”. Tonight during SEN’s ‘The Run Home’ I had to put up with Brett Ogle who was bought, sorry brought, to me by a retail outlet that sells golf equipment.

Ogle was complaining that the US Open has stuck with its traditional 18-hole play-off format. His argument is worthy of further discussion but his evidence for it was poor.

He stated that the US Masters and US PGA Championship are both decided by sudden death. Wrong. The US PGA uses a 3-hole play-off of which there have been two. In 2000 Tiger Woods defeated Bob May at Valhalla and more recently Vijay Singh outlasted Leonard and DiMarco at Whistling Straits in 2004.

Ogle then tried to recall the last time the US Open had gone to an 18-hole Monday play-off. He stumbled and fumbled and eventually stated that it was in 1997 between Ernie Els and Loren Roberts. Wrong again. The year was 1994 and Colin Montgomerie was also involved. Els ended up winning on the second sudden death play-off hole after he and Roberts were still tied after Monday’s 18. But it gets worse for Ogle. The last play-off at the US Open actually occurred as recently as 2001. Retief Goosen shot 70 at Southern Hills to beat Mark Brooks by two.

These may seem like minor points but I expect more from my so-called expert commentators. And I would hope that SEN and Ogle’s sponsor would feel the same way. I am a 6 handicapper who is not paid to cover golf and I knew the facts that Ogle didn’t. Worse still, SEN replayed Ogle’s comments as it came out of its 6pm news bulletin. I know SEN needs all the advertising revenue it can get, but surely it can demand some quality in return?
